The human brain, unfortunately, is not infallible. Information is often lost or forgotten as it's replaced by new experiences, so most of us turn to lists and notes to help us remember every detail. But scraps of paper or sticky notes are difficult to organize and often just as easy to lose. Thankfully, there's Evernote, a powerful desktop note-taking application that will supplement your memory and set your mind free. Whether you want to digitize to-do list or plan your business's future, Evernote will keep you organized and productive.

And while its note-taking abilities are powerful, they're not the real genius of Evernote. The true power of the program lies in its web-based system, which not only clones the behavior of the desktop client, but stores and synchronizes data across all Evernote-capable devices. In short, this allows users to access all of their notes anywhere they have an internet connection. That means a working mom can write her grocery list at home with a PC, then pull it up on her Blackberry at the store. College students can clip web pages for research articles at a computer station, then bring that information up at home while writing a draft on their laptops. The web version of Evernote constantly updates all of the user's devices with the most recent versions of notes and data so the information will always be at hand. Plus, always having important information on hand means never wasting time searching for a lost note.

Evernote offers storage for various types of information including notes, clipped web pages, screen shots and photos. All data is archived in a unique system that will organize everything by the date of creation or storage. The system automatically syncs the data across all devices and allows users to search the archive from anywhere.. Even the images in the archive are searchable through an innovation called OCR (Optical Character Recognition). That means users can take a snapshot of an invoice, then access it later by searching for any text on the page. As long as the writing is fairly legible, Evernote can even search photos of your sticky notes. This feature is especially useful for taking a quick photo of a paper, then storing it for later review.

There are a number of features that will appeal to heavy internet and mobile phone users as well. As an alternative to bookmarking web pages, Evernote allows users to save entire HTML texts with a special add-on for Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers. Users can then share that information with other users or create a URL and share it across the web with Evernote's sharing function. For mobile phone users, Evernote is compatible with iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Palm Pre and Windows mobile phones and, in addition to basic functions, allows users to create audio notes through many of these devices.

In addition to searchable archiving, Evernote offers several ways to categorize information for easy access. Users can organize notes by giving each a title or storing them in "Notebooks". Notebooks allow users to keep track of projects or themes. For example, notes for a business plan would all be filed under a Notebook titled Business Plan while turkey and sweet potato recipes would appear under the Holiday Recipes Notebook. In addition to separating data by theme, users can give each of their notes completely searchable tags. These indicators allow users to quickly access all instances of a particular subject from across the entire archive, or within just one Notebook. Quick, dependable access to a large archive of information keeps users at the utmost level of productivity.

Other features offered include the ability to clip Word and Excel documents into the program, search PDF files using OCR and enable a pass phrase for notes containing sensitive information along with many more. In short, Evernote doesn't replace the human brain, but it certainly makes a tremendous effort. Moreover, Evernote combined with Scrubly, a program that manages and organizes email contacts and offers easy duplicate removal, equates to a lifestyle or career management system geared for optimum organization and productivity.
